COVID-19 testing and Additional Restrictions Grants for taxi drivers

COVID-19 Testing

Why are we offering you testing?

1 in 3 people who have Covid-19 do not have symptoms. We need to find the people who are spreading Covid but don’t know they have it. We are offering tests to Taxi Drivers because you come into contact with residents regularly. The Lateral Flow Test gives you a result in 30 minutes.

How do I get a test?

  • We ask that anyone getting tested does so every 3 to 4 days. This is because it increases the chance of the test accurately informing you if you have Covid. The tests may miss if you have Covid if you only get tested once a week.
  • The site is open Monday to Friday between 8am and 6pm.
  • You can book a test by calling 0161 912 5455 between 9:30am to 4:30pm, Monday to Friday.
  • The location is at the back of Trafford Town Hall (where the Terrace Restaurant is) and is accessible from the outside of the building.  You should not come to the site if you have any Covid symptoms. You should instead book a normal PCR Covid test – online or by calling 119.

What happens if I get a positive result?

You will be contacted by the test and trace team who will walk you through this. You will need to self-isolate for ten days.

What happens if I get a negative result?

That’s good news but you need to keep returning for a test every three or four days.

It is crucial to remember that a negative test does not guarantee that you don’t have Covid.  Testing is just one part of the way in which we can lower the spread of the virus.  Things like social distancing, PPE, and good ventilation are still crucial to tackling Covid.

Refunding your fees to support you

The Additional Restrictions Grant (ARG) supports businesses that are not covered by other grant schemes or where additional funding is needed. The licensing team are processing ARG applications to cover the cost of refunding your last year’s licence fees. We hope this will give you some money to make self-isolating a bit easier.

I need more financial support if I test positive

There are also benefits and grants that you could claim if you are unable to work, if your household’s financial circumstances qualify. You can find out more information on benefits via the Citizens Advice website. You may also qualify for the Council’s Test and Trace self-isolation payments. If you apply for the Council’s scheme we will quickly look at your application and tell you if you are eligible.

Additional Restrictions Grant

Background to the Additional Restrictions Grant (ARG)

Hackney Carriage and Private Hire Drivers, Licensed Vehicle Proprietors, and Private Hire Operators have been severely affected by the crisis through the loss of trade due to lockdown and associated restrictions. The taxi and private hire trade provide an invaluable service for those without transport, have disabilities/health issues; and where public transport does not meet need. It is therefore proposed that a grant is provided to Hackney Carriage and Private Hire Drivers, Licensed Vehicle Proprietors, and Private Hire Operators who have been issued with their licence (new and renewals) during 2020/2021.

In addition, it is also proposed that new driver licence applications that have been received by the Council, and are being processed, are awarded a grant to cover the full costs of the licence following approval and receipt of payment. The grant will not apply to those that have registered an interest but who have not been invited to submit an application.
