In an ever-evolving digital world, we believe that nobody should be left behind. We are determined to help our residents to develop their digital skills and get online. Digital support is available in your local area to help you get online and develop the digital skills and confidence you need.

Whether you’re a complete beginner and want to start with the basics, can do a little but want to know more, or need advice on how to support somebody close to you, we have something on offer to help. 

Get digital support from your local library

All our library staff are Digital Champions, which means they are experts at supporting individuals to learn basic digital skills and help them get online. You can request digital support by dropping into our libraries, calling 0161 912 3189 or by completing our online form. 

All of our libraries have free WiFi so you are welcome to bring your own device along with you or you can borrow a device from the library. 

Digital Drop Ins

Digital drop in sessions are free to access and open to everyone. These sessions are a great place to learn more about your device and develop your online skills whilst having a chat and a cup of tea. Find a list of all of the digital drop in sessions available across the borough.

Free IT support for the elderly or disabled

AbilityNet IT support volunteers provide free support all over the UK to elderly or disabled people, their family and friends, their employers and other people who care for them.  

AbilityNet services include:

  • A network of volunteers who can visit disabled people in their home to help with their everyday technology needs. 
  • Free factsheets, blogs, webinars and videos to show the many ways that technology can help people with disabilities.
  • My Computer My Way, their unique guide to the many, simple adjustments that can make your computer, tablet or smartphone easier to use.

Digital support for the visually impaired

Are you struggling to read books, newspapers, letters or product labels? Do you find it more difficult to keep in touch with friends and family? Henshaws Digital Enablement Service helps visually impaired people get connected with tech. Through assessments and training, their Digital Enablement team are there to find tech solutions regardless of sight level, age, or technical ability. 

These may include:

  • Optical or electronic magnifiers
  • Smartphone and tablet devices
  • Specialist text-to-speech devices
  • Accessibility software for desktop computers and laptops.

Following an assessment, Henshaws may be able to offer complimentary one-to-one training sessions with one of their staff or volunteers in Sale, Stretford, Oldham, Bolton or Manchester Central Library.
