Council Tax Energy Rebate Scheme

The Government has announced that Local Authorities will pay households in Council Tax bands A to D a one off Council Tax Energy Rebate of £150 to help towards rising energy costs. Full details of the scheme are included on the Energy Rebate leaflet that has been sent with your Council Tax bill.

How the rebate is paid

We have been working hard to develop the simplest way to ensure all qualifying households receive the £150 Energy Rebate as quickly as possible whilst meeting all the validation checks set out by the Government. All April Council Tax Direct Debit payments have now been processed and any qualifying households who paid their April instalment by Direct Debit will receive their Energy Rebate into their bank account week commencing 2 May.

For all other qualifying households, you will be sent a Post Office voucher directly. This can be cashed, credited into a bank account or used to pay towards your energy bills at any Post Office. The Post Office have now issued 24k vouchers and the last of these should have been delivered no later than 6 June.

There is no need to apply for this payment as we have full details of all qualifying households.

Who is eligible

The liable person(s) in occupied households in Council Tax bands A-D will receive the £150 Energy Rebate.

You can check your latest Council Tax bill, or use the Council Tax banding checking service provided by the Valuation Office Agency.

Who is not eligible for the rebate

  • Anyone who is liable for Council Tax on a property that is used as a second home cannot claim this rebate in respect of that property.
  • Anyone who is liable for a property that is empty and unoccupied cannot claim the rebate in respect of that property.
  • If you are not the liable person for Council Tax, even where you may pay towards it you are not eligible to claim this rebate. Only the person named as the liable person is eligible.

Council Tax Energy Rebate Scheme - The Discretionary Scheme

In addition, the Government also announced a discretionary scheme to provide support to other energy bill payers in bands E-H or to provide targeted 'top-up' payments to the most vulnerable households in bands A-D who are suffering financial hardship.

The Council will use the funding to award residents in receipt of Council Tax Support in bands E-H £175 as well as a £25 'top-up' to residents in bands A-D in receipt of Council Tax Support, who will therefore receive a total of £175.
