Trafford to take centre stage at the 2021 Rugby League World Cup

I mentioned in my last blog that we have some exciting times ahead in Trafford so I was especially delighted with the announcement that the borough is to host the men’s and women’s finals of the 2021 Rugby League World Cup.

Playing both finals on the same day at the same venue, Old Trafford football ground, is a first for a main sport in the UK and a major coup for the area. The tournament will see us welcome some world-class athletes and I am sure it will be a fantastic success.

Improving our social care offer in Trafford is one of the Council’s priorities so I was pleased that Ascot House, a care based service for older people in Sale, was awarded a ‘Good’ rating by national health service regulator the Care Quality Commission.

There has been excellent feedback from people using the service, which is provided by the Council and Pennine Care NHS Foundation Trust, and I would like to thank all the staff involved for their efforts.

Developing the economy and increasing the housing offer in Trafford are also key objectives for the Council and I visited two major projects which are contributing to our efforts in these areas

Firstly, I spent some time seeing the progress of the new Metrolink Trafford Park Line which is due to be up and running next year. It will have six new tram stops including Trafford Park which is Europe’s largest trading estate and has more than 35,000 people working there.

I also attended a turf cutting ceremony at a multi-million pound development at Cornbrook which will see 363 apartments being built. This will help meet some of the demand for more rented accommodation and also provide job opportunities in the borough.

Finally, we have launched a series of consultation sessions in Trafford to get your views on the revised version of the Greater Manchester Spatial Framework which outlines how the region is going to deliver thousands of new homes and jobs over the next 20 years. Find out more about the plans
