Testing times in Trafford, but the strength of our community will see us through

Posted: Friday 10th July 2020

The last few months have been the greatest crisis in our generation and I must pay tribute to all those hard-working colleagues who have continued to deliver essential Council services during this extremely challenging period.

One group of people especially who should never be forgotten are those who worked tirelessly in our care homes looking after some of the most vulnerable in our society. Their dedication and continue commitment should be remembered. If anything positive is to come out of the coronavirus pandemic then it must be that we need an adequately funded social care sector.

As someone born and bred in Trafford I know there is a real sense of community in this borough and this was on display at our community hubs which were set up as part of the borough’s response and where I was proud to volunteer.

I saw it at first hand how an army of helpers, call handlers, partners and Council staff made and received thousands of calls, delivered hundreds of food parcels and supported people from all walks of life during the COVID-19 outbreak.

The centres in Altrincham, Old Trafford, Partington, Sale, Stretford and Urmston were, and still are, providing a lifeline to people across the borough and special thanks to everyone who helped out and those who continue to volunteer at them.

However the struggle is not over for many residents and some will continue to need our help and that is why we are working with partners like Trafford Housing Trust to set up a £250,000 fundraising drive to help the most vulnerable and isolated people in Trafford.

The Trafford Crisis Fund will help people receive basic necessities like food and medication. Donations can be made be going to www.justgiving.com/campaign/TraffordCrisisFund. All money will go to the local charities and community groups that are on the frontline helping people in need in our borough.

The pandemic has also put a massive strain on our resources, not only our staff but our finances. It has cost us millions of pounds and we will be looking to the government to honour its pledges at the start of the pandemic and give us the financial support we need to help us get through these tough times.

In terms of infections in Trafford the news is positive – they are on a downward spiral. But we must not become complacent and I would urge everyone to continue to do your bit and follow the guidance around social distancing and washing your hands regularly.

Finally, please take a look at our Coronavirus latest updates and advice page for all the latest updates affecting council services.

Stay safe and thanks for your continued efforts in helping to stop the spread of the virus.

Thanks,

Andrew
