The Steer Project

Salford Foundation is one of ten organisations nationally to receive a grant from The Youth Endowment Fund's 'Another Chance' programme. The Steer Programme works with young people aged 10-17 years who are at risk of involvement  in violent crime because they have associations with peers or family members involved in serious violence, organised crime and/or gangs. Young people must consent to their participation in the programme. They must also meet one of the following criteria which evidence shows are risk factors for serious violence, organised crime or gangs:

  • Experiencing violence in the family
  • Exhibiting overt coercion or violent behaviour
  • Regularly carrying weapons such as knives
  • Disengaged from mainstream education
  • Missing from home or staying out unusually late or on a regular basis

The programme provides a consistent programme of interventions including two hours of keyworker support each week for an average of 6 months. The Steer Programme also introduces support for parents, families or caregivers and aims to reduce young people's involvement in violent offending, organised crime and gangs, as well as other non-violent offences.
