Robert Bolt (1924-1995)

Robert Bolt was born in Sale, Cheshire on the 15 August 1924. His first play was performed in London in 1958 and soon after this he established a reputation for himself with ‘A Man for All Seasons’ which won the New York Drama Critics Award in 1962 and was made into an Academy Award winning film in 1966.

Robert Bolt won an Oscar for the screenplay. As a screenwriter his credits include Dr. Zhivago for which he also won an Oscar, Lawrence of Arabia and Ryan’s Daughter.

George Saul Mottershead (1894-1978)

George Saul Mottershead was born at 33 Lindow Street, Sale Moor in 1894. From 1912-1920 he lived above 131 Northenden Road, Sale, where he opened a physical culture school known as Saul’s School of Scientific Physical Culture.

His childhood dream was to build a “Zoo without Bars”. He went on to found Chester Zoo which opened to the public on 10 June 1931.
