Friends Group

The group started in 2001 after a few local residents became concerned about the park. Previously there was no engagement or ownership with the local community with reports of people doing damage after dark including arson.

The friends’ aim has always been to bring people into the park, to make it a safe place to enjoy the beauty of its surroundings. A small committee formed, and their first event, an Easter egg hunt was a great success. This was followed by a Christmas fair. As the group grew in confidence, so did their events. As a result, over the years the programme has increased exponentially. Among other things they have had Viking encampments, brass band concerts, bat watches, crafting groups, Halloween processions, gardening groups, dog shows, and sports days. The summer music event, Picnic in the Park in 2018 welcomed 5000 people to enjoy live music.

From an underused space, Victoria Park has become the hub of the local community. People came to the park and got involved resulting in a reduction in vandalism. Come and join the group, and share in their pride and achievements.
