Choral singers to raise money for Mayor's chosen charity

Altrincham Choral Society’s singing talents, including their version of the theme tune of BBC comedy 'Vicar of Dibley’ will be put to a good cause.

The choir has announced they will be raising money for Trafford Mencap which is one of the chosen charities of Trafford Mayor, Councillor Tom Ross, for his term of office. Trafford Mencap works locally to support people with learning and other disabilities and their families.

Trafford Mayor, Councillor Tom Ross said: “I am really grateful to the choir for choosing to support one of my chosen charities. I have had the pleasure of working with people with a learning disability in the past and want more people to benefit from the support Trafford Mencap provides.

“I’m a fan of the Altrincham Choral Society and I’ve attended their concerts in the past. I was already planning to go to their Christmas Carol Service, in December, so when they told me they would be raising money for Trafford MENCAP at the event I was delighted.”

Steven Roberts, Director of Music at Altrincham Choral Society said: “Raising money for a local charity is a fantastic way for us to offer something back to the local community. We have been very privileged to receive the Mayor at many of our concerts and, as such, it seemed a natural choice to offer our support to one of his chosen charities.

“We're looking forward to raising not only funds but also awareness and support for this extremely worthwhile charity."

Diane Crichton, a Trustee at Trafford Mencap has welcomed the news: “We are honoured to have been chosen by the Mayor as one of his charities and by the Altrincham Choral Society. Fundraising has never been harder and as a small charity we find it a challenge.

“We face competition from charities that have more resources so every bit of support is vital. The money that is donated will allow us to support the people we all live amongst, and offer information and support to those who need it.

“Equally important to us is the opportunity to raise our profile in Trafford so that more people will know about the work we do and hopefully join us to help in any way they can.”

The choir will be donating all proceeds from the sale of their CD, ‘Religion and Reel’, which includes music by Mozart and their version of the theme tune from 'The Vicar of Dibley'. The Mayor’s second chosen charity is St Ann’s Community Refugee Project. It is led by St Ann’s Church and supported by Stretford United which is made up of a group of students from Stretford High School and Stretford Grammar.
