Top cyclists pedalling towards Trafford

Top cyclists pedalling towards Trafford as the borough hosts the start of the final stage of the Tour of Britain.

The country’s most prestigious cycle race is underway this week and the riders will be heading to Trafford this Saturday (September 14) when Altrincham plays host to the final stage of the OVO Energy Tour of Britain.

The final stage begins on Stamford New Road in Altrincham at around 11am before heading out to Hale via Victoria Road. After leaving Trafford it then goes through all the remaining boroughs of Greater Manchester before finishing on Deansgate in Manchester city centre.

Road closures in Altrincham will be in place at Market Street, Regent Road, Shaws Road and Central Way. There will also be rolling closures of Railway Street, Ashley Road, Hale Road, Victoria Road and Ashley Road once the cyclists leave the town. However, shops, the library and Altrincham Market will all be open, enabling visitors to experience the delights of the award-winning town centre.

A reminder that rail and Metrolink services run directly to Altrincham interchange and will be the best way of travelling into the town centre on the day. Please note Manchester United are playing Leicester City at home at Old Trafford, kick off 3pm, in the Premier League so public transport will be particularly busy during the afternoon.

Cllr Andrew Western, leader of Trafford Council, said:

Being given the chance to host the final stage of such a prestigious event represents yet another major coup for Trafford and we hope to give people in the borough many more opportunities to watch similar events on their doorstep in the future.

Our reputation as a venue for staging top class sport is now well-established. We have the facilities to stage them.”

It is anticipated Market Street, Shaws Road, Central Way and Regent Road will be closed from 5am until 3pm on Saturday. The following roads will also be closed to traffic between 11am and 11.45am while the event travels along the route:

  • Railway Street
  • Ashley Road
  • Hale Road
  • Victoria Road
  • Ashley Road
