Urmston Leisure Centre’s £7m redevelopment has earned praise for its innovative use and sustainability.

The leisure centre – renamed move Urmston – recently re-opened its doors after undergoing the extensive refit, followed by the coronavirus lockdown.

Membership of the centre has already risen, with residents making good use of the large sports hall that allows flexible space.
And now the refurbishment by Trafford Council has been highlighted in the RIBA journal, the prestigious magazine for the architecture industry.

In the article, the Council was praised for its commitment to public health, as well as ensuring the centre was greener, more efficient and reduced its carbon footprint. The rebuilding work itself was hailed for its innovative use of natural light and ventilation that saves energy – and keeps users of the leisure centre cool.

Architects 5 Plus also earned plaudits for opening up the entrance area. This now contains a climbing wall, which was designed by a local eight-year-old girl, Catriona Ledger, after she won a Trafford wide school competition.

Jo Cherrett, COO, Trafford Leisure said:

“It is fantastic that our redeveloped facility is being recognised for its innovative, inclusive and sustainable design. It is a space that welcomes and inspires people to try something new.

Move Urmston is so much more than a leisure centre, and we have loved bringing this community hub to life for the people of Trafford.”

Cllr Liz Patel, Trafford Council’s Executive Member for Culture and Leisure, said:

“I am delighted that the redevelopment has been praised – and that our focus on health and wellbeing is highlighted. It is more important than ever that we all live active lifestyles and our leisure facilities are a really important feature of that.”

If you live or work in or around Urmston, I would urge you to visit the leisure centre and see the amazing range of activities going on. There is something for everyone."
