Trafford Council is to light up Altrincham Town Hall in orange to highlight a worldwide campaign to end violence against women.

The building will be illuminated on Wednesday November 25 to mark the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women and throughout the 16 days of Activism, which comes to a close on Human Rights Day.

The event is part of a United Nations campaign to help 'Orange the World: Fund, Respond, Prevent, Collect!' to mark the global annual campaign against gender-based violence.

Recent reports show an alarming increase in incidents of domestic violence internationally as families stayed inside their homes due to the strict Covid 19 lockdown measures. The campaign, launched locally by the Mayor of Trafford, Cllr Rob Chilton, calls for the prevention and elimination of violence against women and girls.

Cllr Chilton said:

“This is my final act as Mayor of Trafford and is a very important issue to finish on. Violence against women and girls can never be justified and cannot be tolerated in a civilised society. The 16 Days of Activism to End Gender-Based Violence highlights that it is still happening in far too many places, and I would like to thank local organisations such as Trafford Domestic Abuse Services and the Manchester Soroptimists, who are doing tremendous work locally to raise awareness and support women who have been subject to this violence."
