Have your say on shaping Trafford's future

Trafford Council is inviting residents and businesses to have their say on an ambitious draft plan to shape the future of Trafford by 2037 and beyond.

The Trafford Local Plan designates land for specific uses and identifies opportunities for development as well as protection with a vision for what type of place Trafford will be in the future.

The Plan sets out a vision and framework of policies for the future development of Trafford, addressing needs in Trafford and providing a framework to deliver inclusive places, new housing, economic growth, community facilities and infrastructure. It is also a basis for conserving and enhancing the natural and historic environment, mitigating and adapting to climate change, and achieving well designed places.

The Local Plan will play an important part in the future growth of Trafford by helping to set planning policies and allocates sites for development, protection or for other purposes including town centre boundaries or green networks. It is part of the Statutory Development Plan for Trafford and it will form the basis for making decisions on planning applications.

Once adopted, it will become the main land-use planning document for Trafford, and form part of the Council’s overall Development Plan alongside the joint Greater Manchester Waste and Minerals plans and any adopted neighbourhood plan. The Development Plan will also include any adopted area action plans (AAPs) such as the emerging Civic Quarter AAP and Stretford AAP and any strategic planning documents for Greater Manchester.

The Trafford Local Plan does not set housing and employment land requirements and does not undertake any review of the Green Belt. This is being addressed through a sub-regional plan which is currently being prepared by the majority of Greater Manchester.

Residents are invited to comment on the draft Trafford Local Plan from Thursday 4th February to Thursday 18th March 2021 at 5pm.

Due to the ongoing restrictions as a result of the response to Covid-19 this consultation is being held virtually. You can view the Council’s consultation documents at www.trafford.gov.uk/local-plan-consultations. Wherever possible, consultation responses should be made using the online surveys provided.

Councillor James Wright, Trafford Council’s Executive Member for Housing and Regeneration, said:

“It is important people have a look at the Plan and have their say on its policies, as this will shape the future of Trafford as a better place with the right housing, job opportunities and green spaces in the right places. Policies that can respond to climate change, enable more active travel and encourage more use of public transport so that in the future we can be less reliant on car use”.

For information on how to access the consultation resources online via your local library please contact them for further information as opening hours and social distancing requirements vary for each location.

If you have any enquiries, please email localplan.consultation@trafford.gov.uk or call 0161 912 3149 and a member of the Strategic Planning Team will be able to help.
