Trafford Mayor pays tribute following the death of the Duke of Edinburgh

Trafford Mayor, Cllr Laurence Walsh, has paid tribute to the Duke of Edinburgh following his death today aged 99.

The Mayor said His Royal Highness The Prince Philip had devoted his life to the country and that his death would be mourned by millions of people in the United Kingdom and throughout the Commonwealth and the rest of the world.

A statement from Buckingham Palace said His Royal Highness passed away peacefully at Windsor Castle.

Cllr Walsh said:

"I am deeply saddened to hear of the death of Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh. Alongside the Queen, Prince Philip has served our country selflessly, steadfastly and resolutely. He provided incredible support for Her Majesty the Queen and will be sadly missed.

Through his inspirational Duke of Edinburgh Awards, His Royal Highness has helped thousands of youngsters across the country, Europe and the rest of the world and was also patron of hundreds of charities and good causes.”

Since retiring from his official royal duties in 2017, Prince Philip has appeared in public alongside the Queen and other members of the Royal Family at a number of official events and church services.

A book of condolence has been set up for people to pay tribute. It is available at www.royal.uk.
