Trafford Council is supporting the most vulnerable members of our communities this Christmas by handing out special ‘winter well’ packs.

The packs, which contain items including a blanket, hat, gloves, scarf, socks, torch, hot water bottle, lip balm and temperature monitor, are aimed at helping older people and vulnerable people stay fit and well this winter.

Trafford Council and a number of partners took the decision to take action over fears that older people would be struggling to keep well during the freezing conditions we are currently experiencing.

Dozens of volunteers, Council staff and colleagues from Amey and Trafford Leisure have been busy packing the items into boxes ready for them to be distributed to communities in the run up to Christmas. The items will be handed out to community centres and taken door-to-door by our army of volunteers.

Cllr Joanne Harding, Trafford Council’s Executive Member for Adult Social Care, and Cllr Mike Cordingley, have been helping pack the bags to support the initiative in their communities.

Cllr Harding said:

“Thousands of older and vulnerable people across our communities will face a struggle to keep fit and well this winter and, for that reason, we decided to do our bit to help by giving out the packs. It is a real concern that some people will be struggling at home in the freezing temperatures and, as a Council, we cannot accept that.

“The situation is obviously made worse by the fact that our hospitals and community services are preparing to support the predicted increase in hospital admissions and residents isolating at home with the Covid. Our volunteers will be out and about over the next few days giving out the packs. I would like to thank each and every one of them for all their hard work – these packs will make a difference to people’s lives.”
