Trafford residents asked for views on multi-million pound plans to transform Sale Leisure Centre

Trafford Council has launched a consultation to find out what local residents think of multi-million pound plans to refurbish Sale Leisure Centre.

The Council and Trafford Leisure are planning to transform the popular leisure centre into a state-of-the-art facility for the whole community to enjoy as part of its physical activity strategy.

The consultation runs from June 1 to June 26, 2022, and can be viewed and completed on our Citizens Space page.

Drop-in consultation events will also take place at Sale Leisure Centre on Tuesday 14th June 4-7pm, Thursday 16th June 12-2pm and Saturday 18th June 10am-12pm. The public can also give feedback on the refurbishment by emailing salelcconsultation@trafford.gov.uk.

The planned mix of facilities at the centre has been developed with support from Sport England to deliver long-term sustainable leisure provision, which gives the best health and wellbeing outcomes for residents using the facility. The proposed design includes a 25m pool and a leisure pool, a 100-station fitness suite, four studios and a four-court sports hall, a lobby and viewing café, a wet and dry village change and a Changing Places accessible changing and toilet area.

The redevelopment designs also include the replacement of the fossil fuel (gas) heating system with Air Sourced Heat Pumps and Solar Panels, which are significantly more sustainable options and support Trafford Council’s carbon neutral action plan.

The investment also supports Trafford Council’s strategy and commitment to get more people moving more often as part of its Physical Activity Strategy, ‘Trafford Moving’; a borough-wide long-term strategy to support the health and wellbeing of local residents through affordable, sustainable, accessible and exciting, modern leisure facilities.

Jo Cherrett is CEO of Trafford Leisure, a community interest company, wholly owned by Trafford Council, which manages the facilities on behalf of Trafford Council and uses any profits and assets for community benefit. She says:

“We couldn’t be happier to share the proposals for Sale Leisure Centre and we are excited about how this redevelopment will completely transform the facility, future proofing it for generations to come.

“We are passionate about creating a safe space and bringing to life a community hub that is suitable for everyone in the Sale community. The range of new facilities, classes, services and equipment in the proposals demonstrate there really is something for everyone. A healthy lifestyle is the foundation to a happy life and our vision is to make Trafford the most active borough in the UK.”

Cllr Joanne Harding, Trafford Council’s Executive Member for Culture and Leisure, says:

“We are totally committed to the health and wellbeing of our community, and a key element of this is to improve our much-loved leisure centres. We are planning to provide fabulous, modern, state-of-the-art leisure centres to help our residents become more physically active.

“This consultation is designed to help residents decide what facilities they would like to see at Sale Leisure Centre. We ask people to take the time to view our extensive plans and contribute to our consultation.”
