Town centre improvement work due to start next month

Work to continue the vast improvements to Altrincham town centre is due to start next month, Trafford Council has announced.

The public realm work is designed to further improve the look and feel of the town centre to benefit residents, businesses and attract more visitors to Altrincham.

The works, which will also benefit active travel through new cycle lanes, will be delivered in two phases with George Street and Regent Road starting first, followed by Market Street.

The work involves:

  • George Street will be resurfaced and a number of breakout and seating areas will be added to encourage and support food and beverage establishments. New trees will be planted on George Street along with sustainable drainage (SuDS) and green areas.
  • Regent Road will become one way from the junction of Railway Street and Market Street and will be accessed towards Dunham Road. There will be a new contraflow cycle lane that is segregated and lined with rain gardens that introduce trees, green areas and SuDS to the area.
  • The work to Market Street involves the reversal of the existing Market Street one way system along with restrictions to Groby Road from Dunham Road. Access from Groby Road to Dunham Road will still be available.

Cllr Liz Patel, Trafford Council’s Executive Member for Economy and Regeneration, said:

“We are totally committed to improving our town centres and it is great news that the continued work is due to start soon on the next phase of the public realm in Altrincham.

We consulted with the public on the initial plans and these have been changed in light of the responses that we received. People wanted more trees along Regent Road and new cycle lanes and we have listened.

These large-scale improvements should further enhance Altrincham’s reputation as a destination in its own right and benefit residents, businesses and visitors alike.”

Work on George Street and Regent Road is expected to start in mid September with a pause from mid November to early January 2023 for the busy Christmas period. It is expected that the work will be completed by the end of May 2023.

The Market Street work should start in early January 2023 and be completed by the end of March 2023 – both Regent Road and Market Street will remain open with limited out of hours closures for resurfacing.
