A56 Improvements Works take place as part of £2.5million Key Route Network Investment

Improvement works are currently underway on Altrincham’s Manchester Road and Sale’s Washway Road.

The project is funded from the City Regional Sustainable Transport Settlements (CRSTS) scheme’s £2.5 million allocation for key route networks. The work is being managed by the One Trafford Partnership

The first phase of the resurfacing works on Manchester Road completed ahead of schedule on Monday 13th March. These works stretched from near Oldfield Road up to the Sinderland Road and Stamford Brook Road junctions.

This prompt completion means that the works on Washway Road will now start a day earlier than planned on Tuesday 14th March. These works commence at Hunston Road and Harboro Road and finish at the Glebelands Road / Dane Road junction on Thursday 20th April. The resurfacing works sees crews remove up to 100mm of the existing surface and then replace it with a new surface layer before sealing the road.

While the works are occurring on busy routes, the project has been carefully planned to allow for work to take place overnight, therefore, minimising disruption on the highway network as much as possible. A combination of road closures, lane closures and temporary traffic lights are in place overnight. Road users may experience delays and are advised to plan their journeys to allow for extra time.

Works are subject to weather changes which may affect the start, duration and completion of the project. If a yet-to-be-arranged Manchester United fixture is announced to take place during these works, we may have to consider adjustments to our programme.

Trafford Council’s Executive Member for Climate Change and Transport Strategy, Councillor Aidan Williams said: “We are delighted to announce these improvement works on two such incredibly important carriageways in Trafford.

“Since April of last year, we have resurfaced more than 282,000 square metres of road in Trafford, equivalent to more than 40 Old Trafford pitches. We are delighted to continue that magnificent work in 2023 with the resurfacing of Manchester Road and Washway Road. As always, we thank you for your patience and care whilst these improvement works take place.”
