Trafford Council wants your views on £18m plans for sports village

The public are being asked their views on multi-million pound plans to redevelop Partington Sports Village.

Trafford Council successfully bid for £18.3m worth of funding from the government’s Levelling Up fund to carry out the work as part of its sport and physical activity strategy, Trafford Moving.

The ambitious plans for Partington Sports Village include:

  • Upgrading Partington Leisure centre with a full multi-million pound refurbishment
  • Improving the BMX track and associated facilities
  • Fully renovating Cross Lane Park changing rooms
  • Building a path around the park to improve access and support walking and running in the area.

The redevelopment programme was approved by the Executive in March 2023, following the successful award of the Levelling Up Fund in February, and aligns with two of the three Council priorities - to reduce health inequalities and addressing our climate crisis in the borough. The investment will safeguard the future of vital leisure facilities in Partington and help deliver huge health and wellbeing benefits to residents.

The Council will now be consulting with the public on the plans at various centres between May 9th and May 21 and June 12 and June 23, 2023. The events are drop-ins and food and other refreshments will be provided. Dates include:

May

  • 16th May 6-8pm - St Mary’s Church, Manchester Road, Manchester M31 4FB.
  • 17th May 6-8pm - Partington Leisure Centre, Chapel Lane Partington, Carrington M31 4ES.

June

  • 20th June 6-8pm - St Mary’s Church, Manchester Road, Manchester M31 4FB.
  • 21st June 6-8pm - Partington Leisure Centre, Chapel Lane Partington, Carrington M31 4ES.

In addition and as part of the consultation, residents will be asked to fill in an online questionnaire regarding the development which can be found here Partington Sports Village Consultation - Trafford Council's Citizen Space - Citizen Space

During the initial consultation period (Monday 8th May 2023 to 21st May 2023), people can also add further comments on the plans by emailing partingtonsvconsultation@trafford.gov.uk

Cllr Jo Harding, Trafford Council’s Executive Member for Culture, Leisure and Strategic Partnerships, said: “This development is fantastic news and gives us the opportunity to significantly improve the health and leisure offer for residents in Partington and the surrounding area.

“We believe these new sports facilities will result in more people taking part in sporting and leisure activities. The development will also create jobs and provide training opportunities and lead to more investment in the area and ties in with our corporate priorities of reducing health inequalities and supporting people out of poverty.

“We have worked closely with the community on developing these plans and we must thank them for their support. We have other plans for the area as well including improving the transport infrastructure in Partington. We want to improve the lives of everyone in the borough and we want to make sure we continue to invest in all areas of Trafford.”

Jo Cherrett, Chief Executive of Trafford Leisure, said: “The levelling up grant will fund a comprehensive plan to generate opportunities for the people of Partington, both young and senior, and will help to make Partington and Trafford an even greater place to live, study, work and play.

“The redevelopment of Partington Sports Village will make a huge difference to the health and wellbeing of our community and we encourage residents to participate in the consultation process to ensure their voice and values are heard.”
