Highways capital programme for 2019-2020

Trafford Council is investing a total of £5.58 million into the 2019-2020 highways capital programme.

Last year’s programme saw 25km of road resurfaced. That’s the equivalent distance from Trafford Town Hall to Dunham Massey and back! But we’re not stopping there and are working hard to keep you moving.

Our programme of 78 new resurfacing schemes will be delivered by the One Trafford Partnership, which is made up of specialist teams of design engineers and operation managers. The team works to maintain and improve 834km of Trafford’s roads, footpaths and cycle paths to ensure the safety of highway users throughout the borough.

Which roads are being resurfaced and when?

You can view or download a full list of the schemes.

Each scheme has been given a forecasted start date. However, road improvements are subject to:

  • Changes in weather
  • Existing underground utilities
  • Upcoming events

This means expected start dates or the duration of a scheme may be delayed.

What if my road is being resurfaced?

If you live on a road which is being resurfaced, we will contact you via a letter. The letter will be delivered to you approximately one to two weeks before the expected start date of the works. The letter will include details such as:

  • When the works will be taking place
  • Which sections of the road will be surface (e.g. from one junction to another or the entire road)
  • If the works will be carried out in the daytime or night time
  • The times in which the road will be closed
  • Parking arrangement (e.g. no parking or restricted parking)
  • Bin collection arrangements
  • Contact details should you have any further enquiries

We will also place signs on the road to tell you when the works are planned. Closer to the time of the works, we will place cones to ensure we have full access to the road surface.

What do I do whilst works are taking place on my road?

While your road is being resurfaced, we aim to keep access to your road and property maintained where possible. Please ensure all cars are off the road when we commence works. Arrangements can be made to deal with traffic movement only if its safe, practical and we are forewarned. However, this will depend on the extent of the works and the size of your road. A traffic marshal maybe on be on-site during operational hours to assist with matters. They will be able to answer your questions and assist you with access to your property.

What happens when my road is resurfaced?

If your road is on the list, it means it has been identified by our highway officers and engineers for improvements work. There are a number of different methods used to resurface a road. These methods depend on the road itself and its current condition. These methods include:

  • Resurfacing - this consists of planing the existing surface off up to 50mm in depth, followed by a new surface layer to seal the road and/or footway from water ingress
  • Reconstruction – this involves replacing the road and / or footway to depths over 50mm, to re-establish structural integrity and ensure that water ingress is prevented
  • Preventative surface treatment methods, such as ‘micro-asphalt’ – this is a fine layer of asphalt sprayed onto the existing surface, with additives and small chippings. Whilst this treatment will not change carriageway levels or improve ride quality in the same manners as resurfacing or reconstruction, the layer will seal the surface from water ingress, which is a root source of potholes

You can find out more about how Trafford’s highway network is managed through the Highways Infrastructure Asset Management Plan (HIAMP).

Schemes in the highways capital programme 2019/20

The roads below have been included on the highways capital programme for 2019/20. If your road is listed you will receive a letter before your road is due to be resurfaced. Works are subject to weather conditions and utilities. This may affect the start date, expected duration and/or end date of the scheme.
