Great British September Clean

We've pledged our support for this year’s Great British September Clean, run by environmental charity Keep Britain Tidy.

The campaign, which runs from September 11 to 27, will see local people taking action to clean up streets, parks and open spaces across Trafford.

We aim to improve on last year’s figures, where nearly 700 #LitterHeroes collected 746 bags of rubbish in Trafford. We are asking individuals, schools, community organisations and businesses to show they love where they live and support the campaign.

We'd like as many residents, community groups, schools and businesses to join in this call to action, and collect and dispose of litter from our streets, parks and open spaces, recycling as much as possible along the way. You can host your own litter pick, or pick up litter whilst you’re walking the dog or taking the kids to school.

Arranging your own litter pick

If you would like to arrange your own litter pick we will help you along the way.

Please register your litter pick and e-mail GBSC@trafford.gov.uk to request delivery of some bags.

You can download our empty belly poster to help promote your litter pick.

Once you have carried out your litter pick you can arrange to have the bags of litter collected by e-mailing OneTraffordLitterBagCollection@amey.co.uk. Please let us know how many bags you want collecting and where you have left them.

Join our photo album

We intend to create a collage of everyone who takes part in the Great British September Clean in 2020 and share it across our social media networks.

Once you have completed your litter pick e-mail a picture of yourself with your litter picker and include the number of bags you have collected during your activity, along with your age, to GBSC@trafford.gov.uk.

Anyone under the age of 18 will need to have permission from a parent or guardian to send us a photo. Make sure you include a completed photo release form when you e-mail your photo.

Golden Litter Picker

The person collecting the most bags of litter during the Great British September Clean will be awarded their very own golden litter picker and a certificate from our Chief Executive.

Litter Pick Bingo

We have identified the top 8 litter types in Trafford. As you carry out your litter pick, see if you can find them. Download our Litter Pick Bingo game.

Alternatively, download and complete our Activity Sheet.

Insurance and health & safety

If you take part in a Be Responsible Pledge litter pick, you will be covered by the Council’s Public Liability Insurance where you can show that you have thought about how to reduce the potential risk of harm to you and your volunteers. You should visit the site where you want to litter pick and carry out a full assessment of the risks. It’s important you consider all of the possible risks to you and your volunteers. Keep Britain Tidy have provided some guidance to help you: Great British Spring Clean Guide for Hosts and Risk Assessment

Each clean-up is different, so once you know the site and the terrain, think about the maximum number of people you could look after during the clean-up. Make sure everyone is aware of potentially dangerous items that they should not pick up. If dangerous, poisonous or hazardous items are present, contact the Environment Agency on 0800 80 70 60. If syringes are spotted at any stage during your clean-up, do not attempt to move them yourself. Make a note of their location and inform us on 03330 035865.
