Council agrees big financial increase to improve care

Care providers are getting a large increase to the amount they receive from Trafford Council.

The Council’s Executive has agreed to boost the money given to care and nursing homes by 9.17%. There is a rise of 8.74% for companies that provide care to people in their own homes.

The fees will rise from 1 April.

Cllr Karina Carter, Executive Member for Adult Services, said: “The people who work in the care profession do such a great job, supporting some of the most vulnerable residents in our borough.

“The sector has been struggling for several year to attract and retain staff so we hope this money will help to stabilize the care market, supporting growth for local providers and improve retention of the workforce.”

The boost will also help care providers improve wages.

Cllr Carter said:

“People should be rewarded properly for their work so we are a Council committed to paying the Real Living Wage. That extends to carers in our borough and the uplift we are giving to providers should be passed on to staff.

“For care at home providers who are contracted by the Council, I am delighted that the number who give the Real Living Wage has gone from 70% to 100% in the last 12 months. More than two thirds of care home now pay their staff the Real Living Wage – that’s doubled from last year.

“We still have a little way to go but I am determined that everyone is fairly paid.”

Cllr Carter added that the increase is good news for residents as well as staff.

She said:

“Retention of staff makes a massive difference. Being able to receive care from the same people makes it so much easier, helping to improve people physically and mentally.

“Two of this Council’s priorities are to improve people’s health and raise people out of poverty. I am thrilled that we have been able to agree this uplift and provide an important boost to our borough.”
