It is that time of year when we reflect on the previous 12 months. Personally, the highlight of 2018 was becoming Leader of the Council. I was born and raised in the borough so it was with great pride that I accepted the role. However, I am also well aware of the responsibilities that come with the job and the high expectations of residents and partners.

I was pleased with the turnout for our recent engagement event around how best we can improve Stretford. Around 100 people gathered at St Ann's Social Club to have their say on the future of the area and there were plenty of ideas on how we can make it a better place to live.

As a Local Authority we have a shared responsibility with the government to tackle this growing public health crisis which is shortening lives, damaging our children's lungs and severely impacting on the NHS.

A cyber security scheme was launched yesterday to protect companies across Greater Manchester against malicious computer attacks, which are a huge risk to our region's businesses in terms of cost. It's a University-led initiative, fronted by MMU, and it's all part of our efforts as a region to protect our digital and creative sector, which is vibrant and growing but also open to potentially catastrophic impact if our cyber defences are breached.
