About climate change

Climate change is real and is already being felt across Trafford with increasing incidents of extreme weather. The severe storms, flood warnings and unusually high summer temperatures, all seen recently, show our atmosphere is altering at a fast pace. Urgent action is needed, which is why addressing the climate crisis is one of the our three Corporate Priorities.

Addressing the climate crisis

Addressing the climate crisis means doing two things:

Reducing our own emissions

Ultimately, we want to end our contribution to climate change, which means becoming carbon neutral by reducing the emissions of greenhouse gases, that cause climate change, to net zero.

Adapting to climate change

This means making Trafford a greener Borough that is more resilient to the impacts of climate change, which we are already feeling and will continue to feel in years to come.

Climate Emergency

We declared a Climate Emergency on 28 November 2018, committing to tackle climate change and work towards carbon neutrality for Trafford as an area as well as for us by 2038.

Taking this action will bring numerous benefits to residents, businesses and communities in Trafford. But we also understand that this transition needs to be done in a way that is fair and that does not place disproportionate costs or burden on people, especially vulnerable members of our community.

Together we can help make Trafford an even better place to live and do business:

  • more active lifestyles
  • improved energy efficiency
  • homes that can withstand flooding and extreme heat
  • greener neighbourhoods
  • cleaner air

But we cannot do this by ourselves. We will lead the way through efforts to reduce our own carbon footprint, we will support climate action through our placemaking powers and responsibilities and will work with the Trafford Climate Change Network and other groups to help drive action across Trafford and engage with our regional partners in this urgent work.
