Tree removal and replacement schemes

In Trafford we have a mature tree population that need to be managed to create a safe and stable tree population to be enjoyed for generations to come.

About the scheme

The scheme is based on the logic that trees have a limited life expectancy which is reduced in an urban environment. We want to create a sustainable tree population with a range of ages and different species. This ensures that the trees in Trafford will be robust against outbreaks of disease and keep the environmental and aesthetic benefits.

The tree species already planted include:

  • London Plane
  • European Lime
  • Ash
  • Sycamore
  • Beech

Why we need to replace trees

The majority of the trees in Trafford were planted about the same time and have been in a subject to similar conditions. This would mean that most of the trees will reach old age at the same time. We can't leave all the trees until they reach the age limit as this would cause:

  • issues of public safety
  • create a financial burden
  • loss of amenity and environmental deficit replacing all trees at the same time

Feedback on a tree

We prioritise certain trees for removal and will replace with a more suitable species. As this is on a rolling basis we can keep the tree lined aspect of a road. We want to involve local residents in the long term planning of their immediate environment.

If we are planning to replace a tree near you, we will contact you by letter to get your feedback. To complete the form you will need the reference number on the letter we have sent you.
