H-bars

Driveway protection markings, known as H-bars, are advisory road markings used to show drivers that a driveway or vehicular access is in use, and should be kept clear of parked vehicles.

The marking is not an enforceable road marking, so we do not have any powers to act against obstructive parking which may take place despite a H-bar making being present. However, they have been proven to be generally effective, and are respected by a majority of motorists.

How to apply for a H-bar

To apply for a H-bar marking, you must already have a dropped kerb or existing access to your property, with a driveway. If you have a dropped kerb and a driveway, you can apply for a H-bar marking.

Charges for installation are:

  • £85 for a single marking.
  • £145 for a double length marking.

Double length H-bar markings can be installed across the driveways or access to two neighbouring properties, should both parties agree. One person should act as the applicant for both parties.

Upon receipt of an application and payment, a member of the highways team will first check that your application meets the criteria outlined above. Once this is established, the work should be completed within 8 weeks. However, delays may still occur at short notice due to unforeseen circumstances.

Faded H-bar markings

There is no obligation to have a H-bar repainted if it is worn out. However, should you want a H-bar to be remarked, you should apply as per the above process.

You should not paint or re-paint your own H-bar marking. If we find that you have, we will remove it and may charge you for the work.
