Filthy and verminous premises

Filthy usually means there is rotting food, human or animal excrement inside the property. Verminous means the property is infested with pests such as rats, mice, fleas, or houseflies.

What we can do

Our Environmental Health Officers can investigate premises that are filthy and infested with vermin. Where appropriate, they may serve legal notices requiring owners to clean filthy premises and to destroy vermin.

If owners don't comply, we can employ contractors to clean the property and/or destroy the vermin.

What we can't do

We can not investigate cluttered or untidy houses and rubbish in gardens.

Make a complaint

You can report premises you believe to be filthy and/or infested with vermin online.

Report a premises

If you are concerned about the person living in the property, report a concern to our Adult Social Service team. This may be a form of self-neglect abuse.
