Care homes

If you need round-the-clock care and support, a care home or nursing home may be the right option. 

A residential care home provides accommodation and 24-hour personal care. This includes help with washing, dressing, meals, and medication.

A nursing home offers the same services as a residential care home, but also has registered nurses on site to give medical care and support for more complex needs. Read more about care homes.

Who care homes are for

Residents typically include:

  • Adults with high personal care needs that cannot be managed at home or in supported housing
  • Older adults who are frail and need regular daily support
  • People with physical disabilities who require specialist care
  • Adults with long-term or complex health conditions that need medical oversight (nursing homes in particular)

Choosing a care home

The Care Quality Commission (CQC) regulates and inspects care homes and other care services in England. You can search for local care homes online and read their guide: What can you expect from a good care home?

In addition to CQC inspections, Trafford Adult Social Care Commissioning have their own Quality Assurance measures across the sectors.

When you visit a care home, make sure to speak to staff and residents about their experience. You should also understand what care is included and what costs extra.

Funding for care homes

If you receive Council funding, our team will work with you to assess your needs and identify suitable care homes. You can request an Adult Social Care assessment online under 'request support.'

If you pay for your own care (self-funding), you can still use our advice and guidance to help you choose a care home.
