Sometimes it is not possible, reasonable or cost-effective to adapt your current home to meet your needs.
The Moving Assistance Grant supports residents who have been assessed as needing major adaptations but whose current property cannot be adapted or would not meet their needs in the long term.
This grant can help you move to a more suitable property.
Who can apply
You may be eligible if:
- You live in Trafford, and
- An Occupational Therapist (OT) has assessed you as needing major adaptations, and
- Your current home is not suitable to adapt, or would not meet your long-term needs
You must also have been referred to Trafford’s Adaptations Team by an Occupational Therapist.
Compatibility with the Disabled Facilities Grant
This grant does not replace the Disabled Facilities Grant (DFG). You can still apply for a DFG after moving if you need.
However, if you receive a Moving Assistance Grant to move into a home that is already adapted, a future DFG request for the same type of adaptation may be declined.
How to apply
If you have already been assessed by an Occupational Therapist and they have referred you to the Adaptations Team, they will discuss this grant with you if it is suitable.
If you have not yet had an assessment, contact the Equipment and Adaptations Advice Line by calling 0345 299 0798 from Monday to Friday, 9am to 12noon and 1pm to 4pm.
Alternatively, email mft.eaal.osrc@nhs.net.
What the grant can help with
Do not start any moving-related work or costs before the grant is approved. We cannot pay for work that has already started before approval.

- Easier and more cost-effective to adapt
It can be used for reasonable moving costs, for example:
- Estate agent fees
- Conveyancing or legal costs
- Packing and removals
This grant cannot be used for home improvements or general decorating.
How the grant amount is decided
The amount awarded will be:
- Based on your individual circumstances
- Agreed by the Adaptations Manager
- Up to a maximum of £3,000
