What is safeguarding

Safeguarding means protecting an adult's right to live safely, free from abuse and neglect.

It requires organisations to work together to prevent harm and protect the wellbeing of a person, while also respecting their views and choices in all decisions.

Adults at risk

An adult at risk is someone who:

  • has care and support needs
  • has communication difficulties, which can make it difficult to alert others
  • is at risk of being abused or neglected
  • is unable to protect themselves against abuse or neglect because of those needs

Who can report a safeguarding concern

Anyone can report a safeguarding concern. This could include friends, family, carers and professionals.

If you suspect abuse, report it to us immediately

What we do with safeguarding concerns

When we get a safeguarding concern, we have a legal duty to make an enquiry if an adult with care and support needs is:

  • At risk, or experiencing abuse or neglect, and
  • Can’t protect themselves as a result of their needs

The enquiry will gather information to understand the view of the adult, the level and type of risk involved, and what support is needed to reduce or remove that risk.

If you believe an adult is at risk of harm, report it to us immediately.
