How to register a birth

A birth must be registered within 42 days of date of the child being born. The registration must be at the Register Office which covers the council district where the birth took place. 

Births in a Manchester hospital

For Trafford residents who have a baby in a Manchester hospital, you can register your baby with us.

Once the registration in Trafford is complete, the record will be forwarded to Manchester register office which is where it will reside. 

If you need further copies of the birth certificate in the future, you must apply to Manchester register office.

Fees

There is no fee to register a birth, but there is a statutory fee for buying each birth certificate. View the latest costs.

When you make your appointment to register the birth, you can purchase birth certificates. You will receive the certificates at the end of your appointment.
