Buying grave space

Part of: Burials

We offer both full graves or half graves for cremated remains.

You cannot:

  • buy a full grave for the interment of cremated remains.

  • pre-purchase a grave

New graves are the lawned type. The headstone is placed on a foundation at the head of the grave. The main part of the grave is in the form of a level grass lawn.

Types of grave

A private grave, is where you lease the Exclusive Right of Burial for that grave. Additional interments can only take place using that grave with your permission if you are the owner of the rights.

You can erect memorials as you choose within cemetery regulations, as long as you hold the active lease.

Private graves

Full graves

New graves can accommodate up to both:

  • 2 full interments

  • 4 sets of cremated remains

A full interment needs to take place before we can inter cremated remains. We cannot accept an application if a full interment has not happened yet.

Cremated remains graves

These graves are for the interment of cremated remains only. Except for the size, all other grave regulations apply.

Baby graves

There is a baby garden at Dunham Lawn Cemetery with both private and public graves available.

Full graves

A baby can be buried in a full grave so the parents can be buried in the same grave when the time comes.

Public graves

A public grave is owned by the cemetery and open for interments. No memorials can be erected or marks made. However in the case of a baby burial, a memorial option is available which includes a standard inscription.

Public or ‘common’ graves are available at:

  • Dunham Lawn

  • Sale cemeteries

There is a fee for burial within the grave. Public graves may only be opened to inter any person who either:

  • died in Trafford

  • who resided in Trafford at the time of death

Grave Rights

The Exclusive Rights of Burial are available for up to 50 years on a renewable lease.

As the owner of the rights, you are responsible for:

  • any memorial on the grave

  • required to give permission for any further interments

You are entitled to be buried in the grave should there be room. You do not at any point own the land, just the rights for the grave space.

Information about grave ownership.

Grave capacity

When you buy Exclusive Rights, the grave is opened to accept a select number of interments.

We cannot guarantee the number of interments that can take place within a grave. There are many factors that can affect capacity.

We cannot be held liable, if circumstances beyond our control, stop the number of interments required.
