This page is for licences that expired within the last six months. If your licence expired more than six months ago, you must apply as a new driver.
The fee for an expired licence application is different to a renewal application.
Renew your expired driver licence
Documents you must provide
Our documentation guidance for licensing provides extra information on what we will or will not accept when applying for a licence.
You must upload or provide the following:
- passport style photograph (taken with a plain white background)
- proof of address, dated within the last three months (must include a date stamp)
- statutory declaration form, completed and stamped by a solicitor
- DVLA driving licence
- DVLA check code
- tax check code (from HMRC)
- right to work document (for example UK or EU passport, national identity card, or UK birth certificate)
- right to work check code if applicable
- enhanced DBS certificate
- Medical Self Declaration
If you cannot provide all required documents and payment in full, your application will be placed on hold until those documents can be provided.
Enhanced DBS certificate
You must provide your DBS certificate that is registered on the update service, all pages front and back.
If you are not registered on the update service you will need to apply for a new enhanced DBS certificate.
You can submit your application without this, but your licence will not be granted until it is provided.

Payment
You can pay online to renew your licence by following these steps:
- Go to our Payments Portal
- Click Private Hire Driver or Hackney Carriage Driver (whichever is applicable)
- Use badge number as payment reference
- Make payment

A dual licence renewal or want to add a dual licence there is an additional £23.60.
Decision
Once your application has been reviewed we will contact you with the outcome of your application and the next steps.
Applications are assessed in line with our Hackney Carriage and Private Hire Licensing Policy
And Convictions Guidance Policy.
If your application falls outside policy, it may be referred to the Public Protection Sub Committee. You will be notified of the date and time for a hearing if this happens.
Grant of licence
If your application is granted, you must follow the conditions of your licence:
Licensed drivers must also accept assistance dogs. If you believe you need an exemption, use the Carriage of assistance dogs exemption application form.
We will notify you when your licence is ready. You must collect your ID badge and paper licence from Trafford Town Hall.
Licences are not sent by email or post.
Refusal of licence
If the Sub Committee refuses your application, you can appeal. You must appeal within 21 days of receiving the decision.
