Every foster family has a unique story. Hearing from people who have already opened their homes can help you imagine what fostering might be like for you.
Our carers talk honestly about the challenges and the rewards. They explain what made them decide to foster, what the journey has been like, and why they continue to do it.
Paula and Roman’s story
Paula and Roman talk about what inspired them to foster in Trafford, how their family life has changed, and the pride they feel watching children grow and thrive.

The fostering service is working with carers to share more stories in writing. These case studies will highlight:
- why people chose to foster
- what the assessment process was like for them
- how fostering has affected their family life
- the support they value most
Case study 1: Sarah’s story
Sarah had always thought about fostering but wasn’t sure if the time was right.
“When my own children became teenagers, I felt I had more space and energy to give. I wanted to help children who needed stability.”
After making an enquiry, Sarah completed her training and was soon welcoming her first placement.
“The support I received was brilliant. My supervising social worker was always at the end of the phone, and the training gave me confidence. Seeing a child settle in and start to smile again made me realise I’d done the right thing.”
Sarah now provides long-term care and says the bonds she has built will last a lifetime.
Case study 2: David and Amina’s story
David and Amina decided to foster after their own children had grown up and left home.
“We had a spare room and a lot of love to give. Fostering felt like a natural step for us.”
They took part in the Skills to Foster training and joined Trafford’s foster carer support group.
“Meeting other carers helped us feel part of a community straight away. We’ve looked after teenagers and younger children, and every experience has taught us something new.”
For David and Amina, the highlight has been watching young people grow in confidence.
“It’s not always easy, but it’s always worth it.”
