Some foster carers also work in paid employment. This can be possible depending on your fostering role, your support network and your employer’s flexibility.
Fostering Friendly employers
Trafford Council is a Fostering Friendly employer. This means we offer policies that support staff who foster, such as flexible working and time off for training or settling a child into placement.
Many other employers are also part of the Fostering Friendly scheme. Ask your employer if they have signed up. If not, you can share information with them about how to join.
Balancing fostering and work
If you plan to work alongside fostering, discuss this with your supervising social worker. They will help you think about:
- the type of fostering you provide
- the needs of children you may be caring for
- how your working hours might affect availability for meetings, school runs and emergencies
The aim is to make sure children receive the care and attention they need while you feel supported in your role.
