Allegations against adults who work with children

If you have a concern about an adult who works (paid or voluntary) with children under 18, you must make a referral to the Local Authority Designated Officer (LADO) where that person works.

You should make a referral to the LADO within one working day if there is information indicating they have:

  • Behaved in a way that has harmed a child or may have harmed a child
  • Possibly committed an offence against or related to a child
  • Behaved towards a child or children in a way that indicates they may pose a risk of harm to children
  • Behaved or may have behaved in a way that indicates they may not be suitable to work with children

If you have a concern about an adult who cares for children outside of work, this must also be reported to LADO.
