Child exploitation

Child exploitation is when someone takes advantage of a child or young person for their own gain. It can happen in different ways.

For detailed guidance on child sexual and criminal exploitation, visit the Trafford Safeguarding Children Partnership website.

Child sexual exploitation (CSE)

This is when a child is pressured, manipulated or forced into sexual activity. Sometimes this is in exchange for gifts, money or affection.

Child criminal exploitation (CCE)

This is when a child is controlled or threatened to take part in criminal activity. This can include carrying drugs or weapons, often linked to gangs or county lines.

Children may not always see themselves as victims of exploitation.

Signs a child may be at risk

  • Going missing or coming home late
  • Having unexplained gifts or possessions
  • Spending time with older friends or partners
  • Skipping school or not taking part in education
  • Mood swings or changes in emotional wellbeing
  • Secretive phone or online activity
  • Drug or alcohol misuse
  • Sudden sexualised behaviour
