Sometimes the most important thing you can give a child in care is your time and a listening ear.
An independent visitor is a volunteer who spends time with a child or young person in care. They offer support, encouragement and friendship.

Independent visitors are not part of social services. Their role is to be a trusted adult who is there just for the young person.
What independent visitors do
An independent visitor might:
- Meet a young person regularly
- Take part in activities together, like going for a walk or playing football
- Help build confidence and self-esteem
- Be someone the young person can talk to

If you would like to volunteer as an independent visitor:
- You need to be over 21
- No specific qualifications are required
- Training and ongoing support are provided
The role is about building a long-term relationship, so volunteers are asked to commit to at least two years.
