What you can complain about

Part of: Complain about a council service

A complaint is an expression of dissatisfaction about the council’s actions, lack of action, or the standard of a service.

You can complain about:

  • something we have done badly or wrongly
  • something we have failed to do
  • a service that was not provided as well as it should have been
  • poor customer care

Some issues are not treated as complaints.

Problems with a service

If something has gone wrong once, such as a missed bin collection, a faulty streetlight or a litter issue, it is a problem to report. Problems go straight to the team who can fix them, which is faster than making a complaint.

Requesting information

Asking for information or an explanation of council policy is not treated as a complaint.

Right of appeal

Some decisions have a legal appeal process, such as benefit awards, planning decisions or school admissions. These should be taken through the appeal route instead of the complaints process.

Services run by other organisations

If your concern is about a service we do not run, you should contact the organisation directly.
