Advice for construction work

If you are carrying out construction works, you should first notify us with six weeks' notice.

We may allow a certain level of noise to occur at reasonable times.

Tell the neighbours

  • Send a letter before the work starts, telling them about the work and what to expect
  • Give them a contact name and number, and keep them informed of the progress of your work
  • Respond and deal properly with complaints received on site

Manage dust

Minimise dust by water suppression, monitoring emissions, and creating a dust management plan.

The recommended hours of operation across Greater Manchester are:

  • Monday to Friday: 7:30am to 6pm
  • Saturday: 8am to 1pm
  • Sunday and bank holidays: no work

Exceptions include emergency and essential work that cannot be carried out another time.

If you are a householder doing some or all of the work yourself, avoid causing noise or dust in the evenings, on Sundays, or Bank Holidays.

Particularly noisy operations, like pile driving, may need tighter noise controls. Pumps and generators should not be left running overnight if they can be heard outside the site.

Prevent obstruction and damage to pavements

Do not:

  • let vehicles or materials block or damage the pavements
  • leave obstacles, holes, or trenches where they are a danger

We may charge you for any damage caused to pavements, kerbs, or verges by lorries or heavy plant.
