Plans for much loved former golf course under discussion

Plans for the future of a much-loved former golf course in Flixton, which was saved from development for use by the community, were discussed by Members of Trafford Council’s Executive last night.

The former William Wroe golf course was granted Fields in Trust protected status in early 2024 following action taken by Trafford Council to secure its future for the local community.

The report to members recommended that the site is used primarily as a community greenspace with a countryside character and that work to improve accessibility, signage, wetland habitat and flood management are prioritised in the short term.

Members of the Executive were also told that the Council will continue to explore external funding opportunities with partners including City of Trees to deliver these improvements in the long term. The Council is currently carrying out site management activities such as grass cutting and grass path rotation, hedgerow and tree maintenance work.

The site is an extremely popular green space within the community for visitors ranging from families and dog walkers to bird watchers and joggers and, under Fields in Trust rules, will be kept open and accessible to the public forever. The Council, which has made tackling the climate crisis a priority, had been working tirelessly with the community group for five years to secure protection for the site.

Cllr Liz Patel, Trafford Council’s Executive Member for Economy and Regeneration, said:

“The William Wroe site is extremely popular with the community and I was obviously delighted when it was granted Fields in Trust protected status.

“We now need to look to the future to decide the key priorities and uses for the site. It is recommended that the site is used as a green space for the community and that will be our priority going forward. The long term will see this work continuing along with a need to access funding for the site.”
