Produced by the Growth Company, the report highlights how Sale’s Waterside Arts made a powerful contribution to both the local economy and the community life of the town.

In the last financial year, Trafford Council's vibrant arts and cultural hub generated £3.3 million of value to the local economy and supported 61 on-site roles. This includes employees, freelancers and facility staff, contributing an estimated £1 million in Gross Value Added (GVA).

Located in the heart of Sale and overlooking the Bridgewater Canal, Waterside Arts has been a cornerstone of Trafford’s creative landscape since opening in 2004. With a varied programme of live performances, exhibitions, festivals, community events and artist development activity, the venue continues to serve as a vibrant hub for creativity and inclusive economic growth.

The report also reveals the far-reaching financial benefit of Waterside Arts to the wider local economy. Its nearly 100,000 annual visitors generated an estimated £2.3 million in local spend, supporting independent businesses, restaurants and shops in the area.

Beyond its economic value, the report underscores Waterside Arts’ central role in community participation, cultural inclusion and widening access to the arts. Forty percent of all ticketed visitors benefited from concessionary rates, aligning with Trafford Council’s commitment to tackling cultural exclusion and ensuring affordability for families, older residents, disabled people and those on low incomes.

The venue’s impact extends well beyond its building. Major community festivals, including Refract, Pride in Trafford, and the much-loved Lantern Parade, bring cultural experiences into public spaces and create shared moments for residents across the borough.

Waterside Arts also continues to champion local creatives through its Creative Industries Trafford programme, supporting emerging talent and offering development opportunities for freelancers and artists across Greater Manchester.

Cllr Eve Parker, Executive Member for Leisure, Arts, Culture and Heritage, said:

“This report clearly shows that Waterside Arts is not only a cultural gem, but a powerful economic driver for Sale and the wider borough. The venue stands as an example of our commitment to accessibility, creativity and community.

“I’m incredibly proud of Trafford Council’s continued investment in Waterside Arts and its passionate team whose work supports local talent and makes culture accessible to everyone, regardless of background or circumstance.”

Darren Adams, Venue Manager for Waterside Arts, said:

“Every day we see how creativity brings people together, whether that’s a family enjoying their first theatre show or a local artist taking the next step in their career.

"This report puts numbers to what we experience on the ground: Waterside Arts is a place where culture, community and creativity come together.

"We’re incredibly proud of the role we play in making our town an inspiring, prosperous and welcoming destination.”
