Early detection success as Trafford lung health checks reach over 2,000 residents

A community health initiative to provide lung health checks in Trafford West has been hailed as a major success.

In the first wave of NHS-led checks in Partington, more than 750 eligible residents took up the offer of a free lung health check — with six now under hospital care for investigations into potential lung cancer that may otherwise have gone undetected.

The mobile unit, based outside Partington Shopping Centre, formed part of a wider plan to support early detection of lung disease and cancer — particularly among residents aged 55 to 74 who smoke or have smoked in the past. The checks were available to eligible individuals registered with GP practices in the Trafford West Primary Care Network.

The prime location was secured thanks to the support of the shopping centre’s landlords, Local Retail Fund, and its managing agents, MAPP.

A MAPP spokesperson said:

“In collaboration with our client, we were delighted to support this vital health initiative by working with local services and the community to provide a base for the unit. It’s fantastic to see so many Trafford residents benefit from greater access to essential care.”

The programme is part of a wider partnership between Trafford Council, the NHS, Trafford Local Care Organisation and the Trafford West Neighbourhood Team — bringing services directly into communities to support early diagnosis, reduce health inequalities, and help people live longer, healthier lives.

So far, the Lung Health Checks across West Trafford have had an excellent response:

• 2,032 lung health checks completed.

• 1,004 people invited for a scan.

• 20 patients currently under hospital care for lung cancer investigation.

• 130 patients undergoing further check-ups.

Councillor Jane Slater, Trafford Council’s Executive Member for Healthy and Independent Lives, praised the team effort:

“This is a fantastic result. A huge thank you to everyone involved — from the residents who took part to the services and local business community who helped make it possible.

The fact that so many people are now receiving vital care thanks to these checks is exactly the kind of proactive, neighbourhood-based health support we want to see more of in Trafford.”
