Get some Altrincham parklife this festive season

Residents across Altrincham are being urged to get out into the open air and enjoy some festive parklife in the run up to this Christmas and New Year.

The One Trafford Partnership (OTP) – a collaboration between Trafford Council and Amey – want residents to get out and about and enjoy the fabulous Christmas and New Year activities being laid on at Stamford Park and John Leigh Park.

Both parks are hoping the activities will encourage families to put down the mince pies and chocolates and take part in the fun between now and the New Year.

The Friends of Stamford Park, and St George’s Church, have organised a fabulous Nativity Trail event throughout December where families are invited to find 12 hidden letters to reveal a festive message and sweets at the end. To take part, collect your map from the Café in the Park or the Little Deli for a small £1 donation. There is also a Festive Clean Up on Sunday December 7 from 2pm to 3pm where families are encouraged to dress up in fancy dress for a litter pick, meet at the bowling pavilion.

The Friends of John Leigh Park have teamed up with Altrincham Baptist Church and St George’s Church to organise a special Carols in the Park event on December 21. An advent trail event has also been organised to take place in the park from December to January.

The Friends of Stamford Park and Friends of John Leigh Park are also calling on local people to help out and support their local parks, by joining their Friends’ Groups.

Jackie Richards, chair of the Friends of Stamford Park, said:

“With Christmas around the corner, we would like as many families as possible to come to the park and enjoy our festive fun. It would good to see people out and about getting some fresh air and enjoying our green space.

“Stamford Park has enjoyed a wonderful 2025. We were awarded our first ever Green Flag and have worked well with the One Trafford Partnership and the local community to enhance and improve the park. We are looking forward to seeing our success continue into next year.”

Alan Rydout, chair of John Leigh Park, said:

“We’ve got some wonderful family-friendly events lined up in the run up to Christmas including carols in the park and the advent trail.  We have a lovely setting here for people to come for a walk and get some exercise ahead of Christmas. We’ve had a great year and were awarded with an outstanding rating at the North West in Bloom awards. Everyone at John Leigh Park is looking forward to continued success in 2026.”

Cllr Stephen Adshead, Trafford Council’s Executive Member for Highways, Environmental and Traded Services, said;

“We are extremely proud of all our parks in Trafford and are delighted that 12 of them currently have the Green Flag award. Thank you to the Friends Groups at John Leigh Park and Stamford Park for doing a brilliant job. I too would encourage families to spend time in their local parks during the festive period where they can escape the hustle and bustle of the town centres.”
