Hundreds turn out to enjoy Frank Sidebottom exhibition

A Frank Sidebottom exhibition saw visitors come from as far afield as Turkey and the USA.

Frank’s World – dedicated to the cult character from Timperley – was created by Trafford Council’s Local Studies team. More than 1,000 people came to their centre in Sale specifically to see the summer exhibition, with the Local Studies team reporting an extra 2,345 visitors to the archive centre.

Frank Sidebottom was the alter-ego of Chris Sievey, who portrayed the larger-then-life character with a papier-mache head from 1984 until his death in 2010.

A spokesperson for Trafford Council said:

"It’s a tribute to Chris Sievey’s genius that so many people came to see the exhibition.

“The Local studies team did a fantastic job and it’s another great example of the culture we have here in our borough.

“Chris was a true Trafford legend so it’s great to honour him in this way.”

The exhibition, curated by Gary Maguire, showcased original Frank Sidebottom drawings, comics, memorabilia and more, including Frank’s red-and-blue strip jacket that was worn on many of his TV appearances and his Timperley Big Shorts FC shirt.

Feedback from visitors included: “It was fantastic! This is a lovely library, thank you so much for allowing me to see Chris Sievey's artworks in the flesh. Got a bit emotional!”

Meanwhile, Mr Maguire thanked the Local Studies team for their help.

He said: “This was the first time I have been involved in setting up an exhibition, but your advice and guidance really made it an easy experience.

“I have been surprised by the number of visitors but more so by the positive response and feedback. Overall, I found the whole experience very rewarding and thank you again for your help.”

The exhibition took place from 14 June to 30 August.
