A free historical attraction launched earlier this year in Altrincham has encouraged local people and visitors from further afield to explore the town’s rich heritage.
A free historical attraction launched earlier this year in Altrincham has encouraged local people and visitors from further afield to explore the town’s rich heritage.
Discover Altrincham: A Journey Through Time, one of Visit Altrincham’s initiatives using UK Government funding, uncovers the past of the town centre from its agricultural beginnings to becoming a mediaeval trading hub, through to World War I.
New audiences have been enjoying the self-guided,10-stop Altrincham Heritage Town Trail starting at Altrincham Interchange and finishing at Goose Green, taking in Old Market Place, St George’s Church, Altrincham Town Hall and Altrincham Market along the way.
Gothic architecture, royal visits, wartime hardships, forgotten ale houses, famous residents and the site of a one-time whipping post for public punishments are all featured.
The trail has QR code activities, meaning participants can click through to hear stories, pictures and testimony about the town.
Mandy White, Director of Altrincham BID (Business Improvement District), the organisation behind Visit Altrincham, explained:
“We are absolutely delighted with the success of the trail. It’s been a huge success. Anyone can come to Altrincham, pick up a leaflet or download it from VisitAltrincham.com. The multimedia nature of the tour allows young and old, local and not-so-local people to fully immerse themselves in our fascinating past.”
The success of the trail ties in with the Council’s priorities for a thriving economy and top-class leisure and culture for all. Cllr Liz Patel, Trafford Council’s Executive Member for Economy and Regeneration, said:
“We’re so pleased about the way Discover Altrincham has taken off – following the trail makes for a fascinating afternoon, out in the fresh air, seeing the sights with a great, multimedia accompaniment. It’s another reason for people to visit Altrincham and get some steps in while they are there!”
