A £6m transformation of one of Trafford’s oldest and best-loved parks has taken a step forward with the appointment of a contractor.
The Casey Group is getting started on essential preparation for the work, funded by more than £3m from the National Lottery, with the remainder through match funding from a range of partners.
The Rochdale based company has been appointed through the Northwest Construction Hub Framework, via a Pre-Construction Services Agreement, now in place for an initial eight-week period.
During this phase, the contractor will work with the project team to finalise design, scope, programme and cost to provide greater certainty ahead of the main works contract.
Future improvements will include a new learning, training and volunteering hub in the historic Long Barn as well as better sport and recreational facilities and restoration of historic and heritage features including the former Longford Hall site and gardens.
Meanwhile, a total of 81 new, large trees along with new shrubs and native hedgerows will be planted in Winter 2026 to boost wildlife and biodiversity, meaning some parts of the park will be closed with diversions while this takes place.
Refurbishment of the popular Pets’ Corner is already in progress with animals moved to temporary homes elsewhere while work takes place.
Work to open up Longford Brook and alleviate floods, drainage improvements, plus new footpaths, seating and lighting are also on the way.
As well as planting new trees and shrubs, some others in poor condition must be felled in the next few weeks, before the bird nesting season begins.
The Casey Group – which has worked on projects from housing to highways and railways as well as open spaces – will also set up a volunteer tool library, to equip people who give their time to help look after the park.
