Crucial Crew helps hundreds of Trafford children stay safe

Trafford Council joined forces with police, magistrates and others to stage its twice yearly safety event for children aged 10 and 11.

Year six students at every primary school in the borough are invited to Crucial Crew sessions at Trafford Metrovicks Rugby Club in Sale, and 625 children were welcomed this time.

The event is run by Child Safety Media with frontline public sector workers leading workshops on matters not covered in the curriculum, including:

  • Personal safety – avoiding hazardous situations, raising awareness of street robbery, online safety, hate crime and knife crime.
  • Road safety – for pedestrians and cyclists, including safe places to cross the road and the need to wear cycle helmets and seat belts.
  • Commuter safety – dos and don’ts for the Metrolink Network, the consequence of not buying a ticket, and how to report incidents to staff.
  • Rail safety – hazards around platforms, dangers of electricity and the consequences of trespassing, graffiti, vandalism and throwing objects.
  • TREDS – Teamwork, Respect, Enjoyment, Discipline and Sportsmanship; transferable life skills and the values sport can bring to society.
  • You be the Magistrate – cyberbullying and encouraging digital responsibility. 

Taking part were officers from Greater Manchester Police, One Trafford’s Traffic and Road Safety Team, the multi-agency Travel Safe Partnership, the British Transport Police, Try It Rugby and Greater Manchester Magistrates Association.

Cllr George Devlin, Trafford Council’s Executive Member for Babies, Children and Young People said: 

“The event is designed to provide children with life skills that will, in the future, help to keep themselves and others safe. 


“We catch them at a time when they are starting to become more independent, dealing with changes in their lives, such as their forthcoming move to secondary school."

“We are proud of this long-running successful programme that always gets good feedback. The multi-agency initiative ties in with our Council priority to give children and young people the best start in life.”
