A special service is taking place this weekend to pay tribute to the brave servicemen and women who fought in the Battle of Britain.
Trafford Council is hosting the event at Sale Town Hall, School Road, Sale on Sunday 13 September 2026 to mark the anniversary of the battle.
Cadets from across Greater Manchester will take part in the event, which proved to be a turning point in World War Two, starting at 10.30am.
Invited guests and dignitaries include the Mayor of Trafford, Cllr Simon Thomas, and the Council’s Armed Forces Champion, Cllr Jane Slater, along with community representatives from across the borough.
Trafford Council is proud to support the veteran and Armed Forces community through its Armed Forces Covenant, reflecting its EPIC values by recognising service, promoting inclusion, and honouring those who have served.
The Battle of Britain took place in the summer and autumn of 1940, and was the first major campaign fought entirely in the air. On 15 September 1940, the Luftwaffe launched a massive assault in the skies over Britain, only to be decisively defeated by the RAF with the support of allies from across the world.
Cllr Tom Ross, Leader of Trafford Council said:
"This important event gives us an opportunity to remember the bravery shown by the men and women involved in the Battle of Britain, many of whom paid the ultimate sacrifice."
Cllr Slater said:
“The contribution of those brave men and women who took part in the Battle of Britain can never be underestimated and we will gather again to remember them. They showed tremendous courage and sacrifice to protect the freedoms we enjoy today - and we will never forget them."
Residents are invited to attend the service and pay their respects.
