The Urmston Plan, which identifies regeneration opportunities and other wider improvements to the town, was given the go ahead last night, February 12, by Trafford Council’s Executive.

The Plan aims to strengthen Urmston’s performance as one of the borough’s four town centres, improve its appearance and improve accessibility and active travel in the area.

It also intends to ensure that Urmston meets its full potential as a centre that serves the local community and is better equipped to meet the current and future needs of its residents and visitors and to support local businesses.

In January 2024, AEW Architects, working alongside technical consultants Avison Young, Vectos and CW Studio, were appointed to produce the Plan and, since then, a number of consultation events have been held with residents who have expressed what they liked and disliked about the town.

As a result of the consultations, the Plan suggests a number of public realm improvements on streets including Higher Road, Flixton Road/Croft Banks Road, Gloucester Road and on land next to the library.

Re-development opportunities have been identified on the site of the former bank on Croft Banks Road, Urmston Market, the Former Ridings Store, at Victoria Parade and at the former TMBC depot building.

The Plan supports the Council’s Corporate Priorities to provide a thriving economy and homes for all, healthy and independent lives for everyone, culture, sport and heritage for everyone and commitments to address the climate crisis.

Cllr Liz Patel, Trafford Council’s executive member for Economy and Regeneration, said:

“The Urmston Plan is great news for local residents and businesses as it has created a positive vision for the town that works for the community and businesses.

“Trafford Council is totally committed to improving all of our four town centres – Stretford, Altrincham, Sale and, of course, Urmston. The new Urmston Plan has been drawn up with the help of partners and residents. It will set a framework for the town centre to meet the needs of residents and businesses now and in the future and will form the basis to be able to apply for funding when it becomes available.”

The Council is currently looking at a number of public realm improvements as part of the Plan for the area.
